George Orwell's 1984 was a book on how the government, Big Brother, had total
control over the people of Oceania. There are many reasons to believe that our
own world is slowly becoming the nightmare. Since the publication in 1949,
Orwell’s novel has consistently trigured heated debates about whether or not
our society has become like Oceania, how accurate Orwell’s predictions were,
and which political parties’ philosophies most resemble Ingsoc. The world we
live in resembles Orwell’s depiction of Oceania in many ways. We lack humanity
and in many ways feel that violence is the only solution to our problems. Take
school for example. They have many hidden cameras throughout the school hallways
that students aren't aware of. There are also cameras outside the school
grounds, some say for protection, I think its to monitor what the students are
doing. In the novel, Big Brother has telescreens set up everywhere. There
purpose are to present presentations by Big Brother, they also serve as cameras
for the party to monitor the people. If you really think about it, there are
cameras almost everywhere looking and observing people. In public buildings, at
jobs, at shopping malls, almost everywhere. Whatever happened to privacy? In the
novel the party has complete power and does what it feels to the people. You
weren't even allowed to think something wrong or you might be discovered by the
Thought Police. Its not like that out here...yet.
